Who I Work With

I work with adults experiencing a trauma response, low mood, work-related stress, bereavement, anxiety, or a general feeling of being overwhelmed. I also work with people who feel ok but would like to understand themselves better or to improve their relationships.

Interests

I have a particular interest in how transitions and role changes can affect our equilibrium, and how readily our roles can enhance or deplete our emotional and physical wellbeing. Roles might include paid employment or unpaid work such as parenting and caring for others. Distress can be related to losses and changes, too many demands, too little support, lack of control, issues around identity, feeling as though you can’t meet others’ expectations, or difficulties balancing health, work and personal life. Over the years, I have become more interested in how neurodivergence can both contribute to, and help with, life’s challenges, and I have undertaken specialist training in this area.  I do not subscribe to the deficit model of neurodivergence, and am proud to offer a neurodiversity-affirming approach to therapy.

Background

I have over 15 years’ experience working in the field of mental health. Since being awarded a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Exeter University in 2012, which introduced me to a range of therapeutic approaches, I have worked as a Clinical Psychologist in several NHS services, for the charity, Relate, and in private practice with people of all ages and from all walks of life. I have experience of working with individuals, couples and families.

How I Work

My work is informed by different therapeutic approaches including compassion focused therapy (CFT), psychodynamic, systemic, narrative, eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and eco-sensory therapy. I am strongly influenced by attachment theory. Understanding relationships – with others and with ourselves – is at the heart of what I do. I will listen carefully to what you are experiencing and work with you to understand how your unique life experiences might be contributing to any difficulties or dilemmas. We can meet regularly for a while to explore your situation and consider whether you wish to make any changes. I’ll bring my professional knowledge and skills but will be very much guided by your values and preferences – the work will focus on what is important to you.
